How the cart works with your theme

Every Shopify theme comes with a cart of its own: a page at /cart, and often a drawer or a pop-up that appears after adding a product. NativeSlide takes their place, so shoppers only ever see one cart.

Whatever your settings, links to your cart page (/cart, also /fr/cart and other languages) open NativeSlide rather than leaving the page. In most themes the cart icon in the header is such a link, so it opens NativeSlide too.

With Replace the theme’s cart on (the default, in the editor’s Global settings):

  • Add to cart buttons keep the shopper on the page. Product forms add the product without reloading or going to the cart page, and NativeSlide opens if Auto-open is on. If Shopify refuses the add, for example because the product is out of stock, Dawn-based themes show Shopify’s message in the product form’s usual error spot.
  • The theme’s own cart drawer and pop-up are hidden on Dawn and the other Shopify themes built on it.
  • The item count on the header’s cart icon keeps up as the cart changes, on Dawn-based themes.

Turn off Replace the theme’s cart if your theme or another app should keep handling the cart, for example while you try NativeSlide out. The theme’s add to cart buttons, drawer and cart icon then work as they did before. NativeSlide still opens from links to the cart page, from your Trigger selector, and, with Auto-open on, after the theme adds a product without leaving the page. In that last case the theme’s own drawer may open as well.

NativeSlide recognises Dawn and the free Shopify themes built on it. On other themes the add to cart buttons and cart links still work, but their own drawer may need hiding, and the item count in the header may need pointing at. Themes not based on Dawn shows how.
